OPPO A31: a budget Android smartphone with a modern design and a triple camera

OPPO A31 is a budget smartphone with a 6.5-inch HD+ IPS display with a cut-out drop, a budget MediaTek Helio P35 processor, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory with expandable MicroSD cards, a rear triple camera with a 12 MP main module and two 2 MP auxiliary modules (macro and depth sensor). The smartphone is powered by a 4230 mAh battery, runs on Android 9 Pie with a Color OS 6 shell.everything is contradictory with the interfaces: there is dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0, but there is no NFC, and MicroUSB is used to connect the cable.

What is included?

The OPPO A31 is Packed in a standard-sized box in white and green colors with the image of a smartphone. Inside — almost a standard set: smartphone, charger, MicroUSB cable, tool for removing the tray, documentation and a couple of small but pleasant bonuses in the form of a protective silicone bumper and protective film (immediately on the screen).

What does OPPO A31 look like?

In General, it is difficult to criticize or praise the design of the OPPO A31: from the front, it looks similar to most modern smartphones of the medium and budget price ranges. In front of us is a large screen with rounded corners, a teardrop-shaped cutout for the front camera and a thin slash of the speaker above the screen. Everything is absolutely familiar: the frame is not the most record-breaking (especially the chin), but it looks decent.

The rest of the case is made of plastic and has a nice streamlined shape. Apparently, the button layout is not the most familiar-THE oppo chip and A31 is no exception in this regard. The buttons are separated at different ends of the smartphone, the power button is on the right.

The bottom is a speaker, microphone, standard 3.5 mm headphone Jack and MicroUSB Jack. Yes, a lot of public sector employees still install MicroUSB. On the other hand, there is probably a cable at home, in the office, and at friends.

How good is the screen?

The smartphone has a large screen with a diagonal of 6.5 inches. Of course, with elongated proportions, in this case — 20:9. Resolution-not its strongest side: 1600×720, pixel density-about 270 ppi, which is quite modest by current standards. But a good IPS matrix is used and there is no noticeable grain.
What are the ways to unblock it?

To unlock your smartphone, you can use a traditional fingerprint scanner from behind and face recognition. Everything is clear with the scanner, and it works without problems. Of course, only the front-facing camera is used for face recognition, so this method is not very secure. But it works well: in good light, it is fast, and in bad light, it also copes, but it takes a little more time. The smartphone’s screen light is sufficient for this purpose.

What about performance, memory, sound, and autonomy?

The OPPO A31 has a fairly budget by current standards filling: the Mediatek MT6765V/CB processor, aka Helio P35, 4 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64 GB of internal eMMC 5.1 memory. Helio P35 is a 12-nanometer processor that includes a block of 4 cores ARM Cortex-A53 at 2.3 GHz and another 4xcortex-A53 at 1.8 GHz, the graphics is responsible for the PowerVR GE8320 accelerator.

What’s wrong with the interface?

OPPO A31 runs on Android 9 with the proprietary ColorOS 6.1.2 shell. Given that the smartphone is new, you can certainly expect an update to Android 10 bundled with Color OS 7. There are no complaints about the current version: there are no bugs, brakes, or critical problems with localization. Work stably. Externally, the interface has been completely redrawn, but there are no cardinal differences in the work itself. As is the case with most third-party shells, manufacturers change their appearance and add a little functionality. Standard desktops are available where you can place app shortcuts and widgets, and you can also enable a separate menu with apps. The curtain has been slightly modified: it is still two-level, but opens to the full screen.

How good are the cameras?

The camera configuration is quite simple: the rear camera consists of a 12-megapixel main module with an f/1.8 aperture and phase autofocus. There is an additional macro camera with a resolution of 2 MP, f / 2.4 and a depth sensor at 2 MP, f / 2.4. Video writes in 1080p@30fps. The front-facing camera is 8 MP, f / 2.0. the Proprietary camera app is extremely easy to use. Scroll through the main modes: photo, video, and portrait. Additional modes are available in the drop-down menu. Unfortunately, there is no night mode. The main screen has settings for flash, HDR, filters, and digital zoom switching.

Conclusion

In the budget segment, there is always a fierce struggle. And despite the fact that the OPPO A31 is not an unambiguous favorite in its price category, it turned out to be quite a pleasant smartphone to use with a modern design, a nice color rendering and brightness of a large display, a decent battery life, separate slots for two SIM cards and a memory card, a pleasant, convenient and adequately working interface. The main problem of the smartphone is the presence of quite strong competitors: there are not many of them, but Xiaomi and Huawei have a couple of models that can offer more resolution, a more powerful processor and NFC.
